Dreyfus, a philosopher, at UC Berkeley in 1980, commissioned by the U.S. Air Force Office of Scientific Research to understand how pilots move from following rules to acting on instinct under pressure. It became one of the most influential accounts of how people actually learn — carried into nursing by Patricia Benner's From Novice to Expert (1984), and into medicine, aviation, and engineering ever since. We build on their work — the five stages from Novice to Expert, and the mastery beyond — and add a seventh rung of our own, Pioneer, for the frontier that has no map yet.
